But it’s not just about the gear – we’re passionate about promoting safe and proper fish handling if you choose to catch-and-release. We believe in respecting our finned friends and making sure they swim away strong for another day.

Here are some tips for practicing proper catch and release with fish:
  • Use wet hands: Wet hands or gloves help reduce the loss of a fish's protective mucus.
  • Dehook in the water: Dehook the fish in the water whenever possible.
  • Keep air exposure minimal: If you must remove a fish from the water, keep air exposure to a minimum and try to do so in less than 60 seconds.

  • Support the fish: Support the fish in a landing net or cradle it gently with one hand beneath the belly near the water surface.

  • Avoid squeezing: Avoid squeezing tightly, which can damage internal organs and muscle tissue.

  • Use circle hooks: Circle hooks are designed to catch in the corner of the mouth instead of deep-hooking a fish.

  • Use heavier tackle: In hot weather, use heavier tackle to reduce the amount of time the fish is fighting.

  • Fish early or late: Fish early in the morning or in the evening when water temperatures are cooler.

  • Resuscitate an exhausted fish: Face the fish into the current and gently force water into its mouth and over its gills.

  • Watch the fish: Watch the fish when released, and recover it if it doesn't swim away.

We’re also big on environmental preservation. HookAddikt is committed to keeping our waters clean and thriving. We know that a healthy environment means better fishing for everyone.

There are several ways to practice environmental preservation while fishing, including:

  • Catch and release: This technique lets fish continue their natural life cycle and grow into future generations. When releasing a fish, you can:

    • Dehook the fish in the water

    • Cut the line as close to the hook as possible

    • Minimize air exposure

    • Handle the fish as little as possible

    • Avoid touching the fish's eyes and gills

    • Support the fish's weight along its body

  • Avoid sensitive areas: Avoid marine protected areas.

  • Avoid live bait: This reduces the risk of introducing non-native species.

  • Clean, drain, dry, dispose: This reduces the spread of invasive species.

  • Use non-toxic sinkers and jigs: Lost sinkers can be mistaken for food by waterbirds.

  • Properly dispose of litter and fishing line: Many public boat ramps have recycling bins for fishing line.

  • Clean your gear: Clean your gear when switching between locations to avoid introducing foreign plant life or bacteria.

  • Retrieve lost equipment: Retrieve all of your lost equipment when you're finished so it doesn't harm wildlife.

  • Maintain your boat: If you have a boat, make sure it is properly maintained to avoid burning excess fuel or oil.

  • Use reusable water bottles: Fill reusable water bottles for your fishing trips instead of using disposable plastic bottles.
So get the f*ck out on the water with some gear from HookAddikt and catch those state records and PB's!!!
